Mills, the right-back, remarked of Ronaldinho’s goal, “I will never believe that it was purposeful.” Later in the game, the defender had another run-in with the Brazilian, when he was the victim of the foul that led to Ronaldinho’s dismissal.
Mills then moved to Leeds United, where he lasted until the team was relegated from the Premier League in 2004. He was just 25 at the time of the 2002 World Cup, but injuries forced him to retire early in 2009, five years after his last appearance for his country.
Since hanging up his boots, the former Charlton youth has done a lot of media work. Meanwhile, his son George is a top 50 athlete in the world in the 1500m.
