Here is your 4am Newcastle United transfer digest.
Hugo Ekitike was the one that got away once again for Newcastle United this summer. The Magpies looked to have agreed a deal with Reims for the young forward, only to grow frustrated and eventually walk away from the move.
Ekitike ultimately signed with Ligue 1 champions Paris-Saint Germain on an initial loan deal with an option to buy. The 20-year-old insists he was open to a Tyneside transfer, but the lure of playing in the French capital proved too strong.
However, Ekitike has struggled to feature for his new club so far this term as he unsurprisingly finds himself behind Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar in the pecking order. The forward has earned just 67 minutes on the pitch in five substitute appearances, with French media already suggesting he made a ‘mistake’ in turning down Newcastle.
Le10Sport wrote: “Ekitike was notably tracked by Newcastle, the English club had made Hugo Ekitike its priority. However, this did not happen. A mistake for the PSG player?
“Had Ekitike signed for the Magpies, the former Stade de Reims striker could have had a lot more playing time than he has at PSG.”
Jack Harrison was one of a host of attackers tentatively linked with Newcastle United this summer, only for a prohibitive price tag to deter the Magpies. Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani insists there was ‘no way’ the club were willing to sanction the sale of the winger, having already lost Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.
Now, 90min claim the Premier League side are ‘hoping’ to agree a new contract with Harrison ahead of the January transfer window. The former Manchester City prospect, who has begun the season in fine form, has less than two years to run on his current deal.
Newcastle are said to remain interested in a transfer along with a number of top-flight rivals. Jesse Marsch has described Harrison as an ‘important’ figure in his plans at Elland Road, and the club are said to be prepared to make the winger one of their best-paid players.
