The Netherlands beat Turkey 6-1 at the Amsterdam Arena on Tuesday to go top of World Cup qualifying Group G on goal difference as Memphis Depay scored a hat trick.

The 27-year-old striker — who joined Barcelona as a free agent this summer — scored his first international treble as the Dutch won for the second time in four days.

With the big win, they now have 13 points from six games, putting them ahead of Turkey at the top of the group.

Davy Klaassen scored in the first minute for the hosts, who had lost 4-2 to Turkey in Istanbul at the start of the qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 finals in March, before Depay added three more goals, one of which was a penalty.

Guus Til added a fifth goal 10 minutes from time, and Donyell Malen added a sixth in stoppage time before Cengiz Underscored a consolation goal.

As a result of the result, Turkey drops to third place in the group, with 11 points, while Norway moves into second place, behind the Dutch on goal difference, after beating Gibraltar 5-1 on Tuesday.

The Dutch continued their dominance from Saturday’s 4-0 win over Montenegro by snatching the lead almost immediately after the kick-off, as Klaassen combined with Depay to score almost straight from the kick-off.

Klaassen then provided the assist for Depay’s first goal in the 17th minute as they doubled the score, and it was 3-0 at half-time after Depay converted a penalty in the 38th minute.

After a VAR review, Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu was booked for a foul on Klaassen, resulting in the spot-kick. On the stroke of half-time, Turkey’s defender was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Depay completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute with a diving header on the goal-line to head home Steven Berghuis’ cross, before Til and Malen added two more goals to seal the victory.

The only blemish came from goalkeeper Justin Bijlow’s errant pass, which allowed Turkey’s Under to score with the game’s final kick.

Overall, veteran coach Louis van Gaal had a successful start to his third term as manager.

He only had a few days to prepare the team for their draw in Norway last Wednesday, but he has since guided them to two convincing victories and a clear path to automatic qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
