The actor was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on October 12, 2011, when a body scanner at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport detected suspected narcotics in his stomach.
The claim was branded as false and defamatory by a Lagos High Court judgement with the help of his counsel, the late Bamidele Aturu, a human rights activist. As he walked out of the courthouse following the hearing, his admirers and supporters applauded him on.
Since these episodes, the actor has been out of the public eye for years due to his deteriorating health, which many blame on his NDLEA detention.
He was airlifted to the United States of America in April 2019 for treatment after being diagnosed with diabetes, which Rev Esther Ajayi contributed N10 million to the international medical treatment.
On February 24, 2019, actor Yomi Fabiyi claimed that Rev. (Mrs.) Esther Ajayi has donated N10 million to the treatment of Baba Suwe in the United States via actor and producer Gbenga Adewusi, alias Bayowa.
Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President, gave one million naira to fund the actor’s medical treatment on February 21, 2019, the Office of the Youth Organising Secretary, APC Lagos also made donation for his treatment.
